 The right side USER MENU block should indicate how many new messages I have. Currently there is no indication anywhere.

As far as I know the system is working very well, I don't see that you have any errors, I have looked again in the code and in the database so everything should work good.....

I wouldn't recommend sex- drinks- or Mac for everyone but they work for me.
